Curecoin Twitter Survey

September 8, 2018
By Ivan Tuma
Charity Division Director

Recently we asked our followers on Twitter:
“What makes Curecoin a challenge to explain to colleagues, friends & family?

We hope the following can help quickly answer these questions when attempting to explain our concept to others…

  1. Why a Hybrid profit/non-profit?
  2. What does it accomplish?
    1. Scientific Accomplishments of [email protected]
    2. Commercial Costs of Folding vs Distributed Computing
  3. Folding vs Mining vs PoS?
  4. “I’ll buy when it *Hits*”

Hybrid Organizations?

Our business model focuses on Social Entrepreneurship – helping accelerate research that was once only in the realm of voluntary activity (supporting [email protected]). We created a Secure Tokenized Incentive with the goal of linking vendors (including our own company store) with our Rewarded Giving model.

Rewarded Giving allows [email protected] protein folding participants, like you, to use our tokens for P2P transactions such as the purchase of products and services OR to donate them to several great causes. This even allows corporations, schools, social clubs and institutes to do the same thing via our Folding Clubs concepts…

“In recent years, Social entrepreneurs have taken the hybrid model to a new level, crafting it into what is in effect a single structure that can operate as both a for-profit and a nonprofit.” – Stanford Social Innovation Review

Some examples of companies with ethical hybrid structures include:

  • Starbucks
  • Toms Shoes
  • Triodos Bank

What Does it Accomplish?

When you participate in [email protected] with us, OR simply purchase CureCoins, you are supporting research! Over 150 scientific papers related to [email protected] cited in over 3700 related works – part of a broader 27,000 citations outside of Stanford referencing the work of Pande Labs (Dr. Vijay Pande P.I.). We’re helping scientists (not just at Stanford) to accelerate the search for cures in cancer, Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s and infectious disease by simulating over 12,000 related protein configurations EVERY DAY! For more information on what protein folding is, and where it currently fits into the FDA drug approval process – check out our 2016 Focus on Science article…

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the Curecoin Team (in collaboration with Foldingcoin via Merge-Folding) is the most powerful Distributed Computing Team in the world, on the most powerful supercomputing network in the world – Stanford’s [email protected]!

So why not just pay for supercomputer time? Why all the layers of PC’s in Distributed Computing Networks, blockchains, folding clubs, etc.? What are these computations actually worth? This has been a long standing question that we will try to answer as simplistically as possible. What makes funding difficult comes from the fact that protein folding research is still somewhat exploratory (That said, thanks to AI and Deep Learning, scientists are uncovering new ways to predict protein behaviours).

Even though protein molecules are simulated on computers, they do require a certain level of “brute force” computation to explore their permutations (or intermediate states). This level of detail would be nearly impossible to produce via physical experimental methods alone. The extensive exploration required, and sometimes uncertain outcomes part of the “protein folding problem” appear to be difficult to fund when NIH funding is still below 2003 levels when adjusted for inflation, and grants have become increasingly politicized. It’s a wonder why computational biology (like [email protected]) via citizen science remains underappreciated as a global phenomenon.

“IBM Titan Computer Modules Being Upgraded”

We can look at the break-even costs, not the value of the discoveries themselves. At its peak in 2016, the [email protected] network produced 50,000 “Native” TeraFLOPS worth of computations per day. The Curecoin team, with FoldingCoin’s help via merge-folding, have produced over 50% of those computational cycles. This is the equivalent of one and a half $97 million IBM Titan supercomputers running nominally at 17,590 TeraFLOPS each (total of ~25,000 TeraFLOPS), using 8.2 MW of power each (total power consumption of 12.3 MW).

1. At recently peak levels, the Curecoin/FoldingCoin team collaboration would cost the following using supercomputers on a monthly basis:

Monthly payment for one and a half Titans (amortized over 10 years at 5% APR)………………………$1,543,253
Monthly power consumption for three Titans (24.6 MW at $0.10 US per kWH)…………………………. $885,600

Monthly cost for computations produced using one and a half supercomputers ……………………… $2,428,853

Cost to produce a combined Curecoin/Foldingcoin using supercomputers …………………………… $21 per merged tokens

2. Using the same criteria, the Curecoin/FoldingCoin team collaboration would cost the following using Amazon AWS Cloud service on a monthly basis:

Monthly estimated cost for producing ~25,000 native TeraFLOPS using AWS g3.4xlarge instances …. $931,464

Cost to produce a combined Curecoin/Foldingcoin using AWS cloud instances ………………………. $8 per merged tokens

3. Using the same criteria, the Curecoin/FoldingCoin team collaboration would cost the following using [email protected]’s distributed computing model.
Using ~950 individual PC’s with one nVidia GTX 1080Ti GPU each (using linear depreciation and $0.10 US per kWH):

Monthly estimated cost for producing ~25,000 native TeraFLOPS using individual PC’s ……………… $27,857

Cost to produce a combined Curecoin/Foldingcoin using districtuted individual PCs ………………… $0.24 per merged tokens

Folding vs PoW vs PoS

Curecoin uses over 80% less energy than most Bitcoin-based blockchains

… since the vast majority of computational power on our network is directed towards protein folding research (Coins are reserved for protein folders and automatically paid out via a dedicated “folding pool” Cryptobullionpools).

Less than 20% of the power is needed to secure the network via a combined Proof-of-Stake (PoS) and traditional Proof-of-Work (PoW) mining (with near-term plans to migrate to a Certificate-based pure Proof-ofStake (PoS) system to eliminate the need for all ASIC mining).

I’ll buy CURE when it “Hits”

We hear this line of thinking all the time …  but it misses a key points of what gives Curecoin its value. Curecoin is unlike most tokens; here are some reasons to consider why adding CURE tokens to your crypto portfolio is a great idea:

  1. Unlike bitcoin, where increased mining competition merely over-secures the network – increased competition among Curecoin network participants actually makes each “token” represent MORE research !!! This is something the markets have yet to discover.
  2. Buying Curecoins actually increases competition and thus research contributions to cancer, Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, various Infectious diseases, and even Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning and Cloud computing research relating to computational biology.
  3. Unlike most crypto-currencies, Curecoin doesn’t require any special equipment to mine (esp. via protein folding). Even a ten year old laptop PC or Apple Mac can contribute to research, and qualify to win prizes via our Folding Club
  4. Curecoins can be viewed through the lens of Carbon Offsets for Bitcoin mining.

Curecoin 2018 Updates and Roadmap

The folding pool is making its move to a decentralized solution where all folding and research rewards will be handled from within the Curecoin wallet client. Recent upgrade of the folding pool to version 1.4.2 brings us another step closer to that while offering a reliable platform to send out the rewards with the current system.

A hardfork is planned for the Curecoin 1.x wallet to move over to full proof-of-stake minting, removing the energy-hungry ASIC variable from the system. This will allow 99.99% of all computing power to go to the research process. Block time will be reduced to 4 minutes to allow for faster transaction confirms when sending coins to and from exchanges and P2P wallets. To balance the removal of SHA-256D ASIC coins and encourage higher staking consensus participation, the staking reward will go up to 4% from its current 1%. The minimum stake age will be lowered from 30 days to 4 days as well. We feel these are a great balance for long-term holders and people that would like to stake quickly. Additionally, lower staking times increase full node participation and reduce the profits lost to stakers who also actively transfer Curecoin tokens on the network. These additions will allow more people to get stake blocks (by about 220%) and the stake rewards will be larger.

The CURE 2.0 wallet will be a new platform operated in a split chain manner where everyone holding CURE 1.x will get an equal amount of CURE 2.0. The 1.x chain will stay maintained and active for further development of new features like storing medical documents on the blockchain and penetrating the multi-billion-dollar healthcare industry.

Today, the CURE 1.x system contributes over 47 petaflops to [email protected] computational biology research. An alliance with FoldingCoin via merge folding further enables the Curecoin Team to dominate over 50% of Stanford’s globally distributed network. These are testaments to the success, utility and collaboration created by our tokenized incentive system. Thanks to everyone who has joined their processing power with us on a journey of discovery; searching for better, cheaper and faster medicines. Each protein-folding participant in Curecoin, no matter how small, leaves his or her own legacy of priceless research.

Client Update – v1.9.2.1

The 1.9.2.1 client can be downloaded here

To ease some concerns about a lack of active development, we will be posting more blog and video content moving forward. Admittedly, it has not been easy to find public updates on recent work.

The team is putting in a lot of hours every week, with many people anxious to join the team to help. We are settling into a better organization system to handle the increased team size and plan to expand very soon. At this point in time, there are 10 members on the core team.

We also encourage you to look at our recent folding production coming out of the Curecoin team. We are continually reaching new records, with a new record broken today.

At 350,000,000 points over the past 24 hours, we have surpassed our previous daily record of 339M points (our new record from yesterday). At the same time, each Curecoin is now valued at $.18 USD, surpassing all previous records since our ICO. The Curecoin community channels, including Slack and Google Hangouts, have been consistently active with many more discussions about upgrading/expanding folding rigs to increase research output and gain more coins.

The recent client update focuses on both network security and functionality. In addition, there was also some tweaks to the GUI (to clean it up) and we have little more info on the main tab. Blockchain sync times should be faster, especially from a fresh sync. We also added, for now, an updated alert key to alert the Curecoin users of the upcoming mandatory updates that we need to release to get closer to 2.0 version launch.

 Thanks for folding!

Curecoin: Our Past, Present, and Future

This post contains part of the letter sent  by the Curecoin Team to Poloniex Exchange in response to the delisting:

Curecoin is a research-based cryptocurrency that is built on top of a system with a net-positive social benefit. Curecoin’s project is to better society by rewarding members using their CPU/GPU cycles to further medical research. Curecoin currently has 6,699 total participants on the [email protected] network. Curecoin is the largest present contributor to the [email protected] project, significantly impacting research across numerous diseases including various cancers, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Diabetes, infectious disease and more, with recent research focusing on investigating properties of opiates and antidepressants.

See a list of the academic papers produced since Curecoin was launched.

The value of Curecoin’s donations through protein folding research to date to Stanford University’s [email protected] project is estimated at $ 6 million (a).

The Curecoin Charity Project is a 501(c)3 non-profit, sponsored by Visions Made Viable , and frequently donates to support up to 10 charities: Assisting medical research (protein folding, childhood brain tumors, and antibiotics), US veterans and the homeless, helping fund education and medical clinics in Africa, helping disabled athletes and promoting blood donations and blood transfusion science. These charities include ANTRUK, Bonfils, and Thumbs Up International. 100% of these donated coins were earned via participation in protein folding research. Through April 2017, we have donated approximately $6,000 to these organizations, plus roughly another $9,000 to [email protected], bringing the approximate total donations from CureCoin to $15,000.

Curecoin has partnered with Foldingcoin (FLDC), offering more rewards to make it more profitable to fold, thus incentivizing more research. Curecoin is partnered with Coinpayments, a payment processing business allowing people to purchase items and services from up to 175,000 participating businesses using Curecoin and other altcoins.

Curecoin is one of the few cryptocurrencies that has a real chance to bring in large numbers of people from the general public into the cryptocurrency world. Huge numbers of people donate regularly to organizations fighting disease. People won’t mind throwing a little money or their idle computational resources at Curecoin when they learn that Curecoin benefits research. For an exchange such as Poloniex, Curecoin could be considered a gateway altcoin for the general public to learn about crypto. Some of those people will eventually try other altcoins as well, and this would increase Poloniex’s user base.

The CureCoin Project and CureCoin LLC have accumulated tokens (assets) to fund ongoing development. We also receive Curecoins from the community in donations. This enables us to pay for work in development, support, and outreach. The public also volunteers regularly, and we are expanding our team to include more community effort.

Development

Curecoin 2.0 will be the first cryptocurrency to implement quantum-computer-resistant cryptography (Merkle Signatures), and will feature a mini-blockchain which significantly improves scalability and will enable incredibly-lightweight wallets for smartphones. The estimated time to confirm a payment on the 2.0 release will be a few minutes.

Merkle Signatures, based on a Merkle Tree of Lamport Signatures (single-use signatures based on selectively revealing portions of a private key which correspond to the bits the signer wants to sign), allow for incredibly quick-to-verify signatures (on the order of 10s of hashes), and unlike ECDSA (used by Bitcoin) are resistant to attacks by quantum computers. Our custom implementation of Merkle Signatures has been publicly available and in testing for over two years, and relies on decades of academic research.

The mini-blockchain allows blocks older than a few weeks to be entirely pruned from the blockchain, as a balance sheet is maintained for all addresses in a memory-compact radix tree allowing for constant-time lookups and modifications, and the blockchain enforces the deterministically-produced radix tree’s current state at every block.

Curecoin 2.0 APIs will be backward compatible to the current Curecoin 1.x versions, so any re-work in implementing the new release will be minimal for Poloniex and others.

After the release of Curecoin 2.0, a new coin, SigmaX, is planned, which will use much of the same code as Curecoin 2.0, but will be mined, and therefore will not allow any individual or institution to unfairly affect mining rewards. Research universities, which issue mining certificates in Curecoin 2.0, won’t exist on the SigmaX network. SigmaX will be awarded partially to Curecoin 2.0 holders according to their balances, and this will occur for a limited time, but at least for one year.

Curecoin 1.3.x will see the addition of GPUGrid as its first step into diversifying research to multiple DCN’s, (Distributed Computing Networks) . Other DCN’s have been contacted for collaboration.

Performance

Curecoin has broken the world records for research speeds of a single research team of all research-based DCNs, (Distributed Computing Networks). Running at over 266 million points per day on the Folding at Home DCN, we’ve brought the computational power to roughly 15 PetaFlops, coming very close to the IBM Titan Supercomputer which runs at (17-19 PetaFlops).

Until the announcement by Poloniex of the de-listing recently, Curecoin registered approximately a 100% gain in price vs. Bitcoin, which itself showed over 400% gain vs. USD over the last two years. Combined, this means that Curecoin was up some 800% vs. USD over the 2 ½ year average. Additionally, the current proof-of-stake earnings add approximately 10% more per year to that.

Notes:
(a) The cost of folding produced to date is estimated by the following computations: See http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_list.php?s= for evidence of 90,897,842,020 Folding at Home points to date.
The theoretical costs of doing this much computational biology using the most popular HPC cloud services (like Amazon AWS or Google Compute Cloud) for our # 1 team member, Ed Olkkola, equates to about $2600/day (evidence available upon request).
Mr. Olkkola produces some 33,765,825 [email protected] average points/day, which is 12.9% of the 262,008,644 points team average per day. His 12.9% goes into the team total of 100% 7.75 times. The Curecoin team theoretical cost is 7.75X$2,600=$20,150/day. When we divide the team 24 hour average of 262,008,644 points/day by the cost of $20,150/day, this equates to a benefit of 13,003 points per dollar spent. Once we divide the total of 90,897,842,020 points to date by the benefit of 13,003 points per dollar spent, we may conclude that the implied cost of computer time donated to date through April 25, 2017 is $6,990,528. Since popular HPC cloud services like Amazon AWS or Google Compute Cloud are retail services, let’s be conservative and cut this value by 15% to get wholesale value. Take the $6,990,528X85%=$5,941,949 value in hard costs of contributed computational power to date.
