Win7 not picking up 3rd GPU

Active Member Customer

Yup, not a rumble. The 3rd card is running its fans. My cards are all radeon 5870s. I have two in X16 slots, and the 3rd on an X1 slot on a powered riser. I tried the riser both powered and not. The Card is not visible in device manager, even after scanning for new devices. F@H client also sez GPU not available.

Also tried a dummy plug in the 3rd card, no goski.

This is odd to me, as I had four running back in the ancient scrypt-GPU mining days.

My system:

Asus P5E mobo
2.3 GHz core duo processor
4 GB ram
Win7 64 Ultimate
2 radeon 5870 GPU in PCI-E X16 slots
1 radeon 5870 GPU in PCI-E X1 slot (not working)

Any suggestions will be appreciated! Thanx all.

I'm not sure why you think it should work in an X1 slot. Have you ever had an X16 device work in an X1 slot?

Yes, jr, it works with scrypt and other mining algorithms. And they worked, and got HOT. I had four running on an even older ASUS mobo but I can't remember how I got Windoze to recognize them.

Now, the folding may not work in less than an X16 slot, I don't know yet. I think it will, as I talked to someone on the folding pool's IRC; he said he had six running. I don't know of any mobos that have six X16 slots.

Speaking of heat, my ASIC miners are warming my home well this winter. 28 outside, 73 where I sit, furnace hasn't kicked on yet today 🙂

One fix that works with certain mobos, put all the cards on risers, use a presence jumper on 3rd pci e 16 slot. I had 5 cards folding this way in win 7. You will want to research how to do this for your specific board. You will also have to figure out which slots to skip when adding the risers. There is a lot of info floating around various forums on how to make this work. Note also that the latest Omega drivers by default in win 7 will limit you to 4 cards.

Another fix, win 8. It just plays better with multiple gpus.
